Kristy Volcom Skatepark Session 2018

Kristy Volcom Skatepark Session 2018 On the night of November 16, 2018, Krisy invited me out to Volcom Skatepark for a night session. I usually shoot during the day, but I welcomed the challenge of working under mixed light. I always use flashes—because flashes give me control over my narrative.

This is Krisy’s home park, and you could feel it. There was a great energy between all the skaters. And when you bring a camera to a skatepark—let alone with flashes and stands—the session always heats up. People push a little harder, go a little bigger. That night was no different.

Kristy is one of my favorite skaters to shoot. She’s the kind of skater who rides whenever she can. And anyone who skates regularly knows the hardcore skaters. Kristy is one of those. She’s got amazing style and lands her tricks nearly every time.

We moved between the bowls and the street section. The ambient lighting at a skatepark always brings interesting color shifts.

 It was a fun session.

Exposure Skate 2022 Returns

Exposue 2022 Olympian Bryce Wettstein

Exposure Skate 2022 returns the most amazing skate contest I have ever seen. First, the level of skating has risen to a new level. For instance, in the past, an advanced trick would have been a once-in-a-contest-moment, and now it happens every run. Further for me, it was inspiring to see this new level of skating. Third, the crowd was screaming every time the skateboarders pushed the new levels of skating. And finally, it was amazing to see Exposure back again. Of course, we all missed this special-giant skateboarding event.

The enormity of this event is overwhelming. Given that, my only complaint about Exposure is that you feel like you can’t experience the whole thing. In fact, I feel that Exposure could be broken up into 3 events. That is to say, one event for each skateboard category.

I am so grateful that Exposure Skate 2022 returns! Because it reminds you that anything can be done and that hope prevails. Thank you to everyone who makes this “hope” happen.

Finally, here are some pictures I took at Exposure Skate 2022. In fact, I have taken pictures at every Exposure event.

A Song About Marching Band and John Stamos

A Song About Marching Band and John Stamos. In 1980 I went to Ireland with my High School Marching Band. And this was one of those moments in your life that you never forget. Much later in life, I wrote a song about this experience titled Band Bus Ride. In addition to being in the band, I was the school’s newspaper photographer. Finally here are the photos and the song from Ireland 80. Lastly, my roommate in Ireland was actor and Beach Boys drummer John Stamos

Cyanotype Print Cameraless Photography. A series of prints made with cyanotype chemistry. In fact, I didn’t even use a camera. And the process, cyanotype emulsion on paper and things placed on top of that paper in the sun.

I learned how to make cyanotypes from Greg Rager at Cypress College. And this was all an attempt to become a better photographer
